Structural Engineered Wood - OSB, Glulams, etc.

All outreach meetings are currently postponed. Please expect to see a clarification of the issues and a revised schedule in the coming weeks via both email and updates on the this website.

This page is intended to solicit and organize input from manufacturers and associations regarding the key factors to be considered in developing an environmentally prerable product specification for structural engineered wood products in commercial building construction.

Please use this page to tell us about relevant information sources, product data, definitions, and any other pertinent information.

The questions listed below are intended as possible points of discussion and are not meant to limit the range of your input.

HOW TO PROVIDE INPUT

To maintain an open and transparent development process, we ask that you submit your comments directly on our website, where possible. PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS

  • How should we define the scope of this category? (i.e., what should be included and excluded)
  • Are you aware of any sources of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) data on specific or generic products?

If so, how can we get access to the data?

What can you tell us about the strengths or limitations of the data?

  • What do you feel are the key environmental issues that should be considered?

Upon review the EPP Product Categories it would appear solid-sawn lumber has been omitted from the list. Are lumber products to be included in the Structural Engineered Wood category? The current category definition would suggest lumber is not included.

WWPA is curious as to why there is no structural lumber category on the EPP list since lumber meets many of the stated requirements to be listed and is one of most common building products used in school construction in California.

Dear Mr. Stewart:

We have been discussing the inclusion/exclusion of a product category for structural lumber for some time and would be interested in discussing this question with you further.

Our initial evaluation determined that it would be difficult to "productize" lumber. The most important environmental issues appear to be covered by the forest certification programs already in existence, such as FSC, SFI, and others.

We welcome any suggestions you may have as to how we might add value to the selection of lumber products for building construction.

Thank you, Greg Shank On Behalf of the EPP Database Team

Does anyone have experience using IPE hardwood as a building component in projects such as roofing systems and support columns? Our team is interested in finding out why no published certification exists on Ipe timber in the green building listings. If anyone can help me locate pertinent information regarding hardwood certification, I would greatly appreciate the help. Please check out how we are using hardwood materials to build sustainable homes, our web site………eco-logic-systems.com

Thank-you,

Bennett Steele
